Robin Hayes' Hypocrisy Knows No Bounds
Hayes' Big Oil Cover Up

Tuesday, May 9, 2006

"Today's press conference shows just how slick
Robin Hayes has gotten since he made it to Washington"

BISCOE, N.C. – Larry Kissell, high school teacher and Democratic nominee for Congress in North Carolina's 8th district, challenged Congressman Robin Hayes to renounce his support of corporate welfare to big oil companies today. Kissell's challenge came on the heels of a morning press conference held by Robin Hayes in Charlotte where the Congressman attempted to cover up his support for big oil companies by introducing a bill tacitly supporting E85 fuel use.

"Apparently Robin Hayes' hypocrisy knows no bounds. He is guilty of protecting the big oil companies. I'm not sure if that's a result of all the campaign money he's taken from them, or the massive amounts of stock he owns in oil companies. It's going to take more than a press conference to convince us that he truly supports alternative energy when we all know he's in the pocket of the oil companies," said Kissell.

Last year, Hayes voted three times against measures to crack down on price gouging at the pump. Congress attempted to give the Federal Trade Commission new authority last year to investigate and prosecute those that engage in predatory pricing. The measure also would have increased funding for low-income energy assistance to be paid for through fines paid by price gouging energy companies. (sources: [HR 3893, Vote #517, 10/7/2005; Reps. Stupak Press Release, 9/28/05 )

Kissell also pointed out the irony in Robin Hayes' press conference today given his vote against an alternative energy plan last year that would have increased investment in new sources of energy like ethanol. (source: HR 6, Vote #118, 4/20/2005)

"I'll give him one thing though, he's got guts. It takes a different kind of person to promote ethanol as a viable source of alternative energy today when he voted against a landmark bill that would have made ethanol a reality right here in North Carolina. Today's press conference shows just how slick Robin Hayes has gotten since he made it to Washington," said Kissell.
