A celebration of women in the 111th Congress

In honor of all the women of the 8th Congressional district, and in celebration of the Women’s History Month, I want to tell you a little bit about some of what I’ve done to address women’s issues in the 111th Congress.

The Anson Record - March 10, 2010
According to a report released today by the National Journal Magazine, one of the most respected nonpartisan publications in Washington, Congressman Larry Kissell (NC-08) is one of the most centrist members of Congress. Kissell was the fourth closest to the ideological center as rated by the National Journal’s 2009 Vote Rating.

Despite the partisan climate in Washington, Kissell has shown a willingness to work with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to bring bipartisan solutions to the issues the nation faces.

Some Congressmen want out of NAFTA

U.S. Rep. Larry Kissell has joined 27 other Congressmen by signing on to a bipartisan piece of legislation that would withdraw the United States from the North American Free Trade Agreement.

The bill is called House Resolution 4759.

Kissell cited his own experience as a dislocated worker who transitioned from a 27-year career in a textile mill to teaching civics in Montgomery County after his plant became a victim of NAFTA.

Congressman Larry Kissell (NC-08) has introduced legislation which would require Medicare to offer fair treatment coverage for Americans afflicted with primary and secondary lymphedema.

The Lymphedema Diagnosis and Treatment Cost Saving Act of 2010, HR 4662, is designed to improve patient care and reduce costs associated with complications related to lymphedema. Lymphedema, also known as lymphatic obstruction, is a condition of localized fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system.

Larry Kissell - Manufacturing equals jobs

We are all too familiar with the devastating effects of manufacturing job losses in our region of North Carolina. I spent 27 years working in a textile mill that closed in 2003. While I moved on to teaching, many of my friends lost their jobs as bad trade deals shipped those jobs to other countries.

These unfair trade agreements have resulted in a 29 percent decline in U.S. manufacturing jobs since 1993. We’ve seen it firsthand. Our district was suffering long before the rest of the country felt the impact of the recession.

Congressman Larry Kissell (NC-08) paid tribute to the sacrifices of African-American veterans by sponsoring House Concurrent Resolution 238 which recognizes African-American veterans for their heroic military sacrifices and patriotism while serving in the Armed Forces.

The resolution passed the U.S. House of Representatives Friday by a unanimous vote. While addressing the House, Kissell spoke about the importance of recognizing African-American veterans for their service and patriotism throughout the history of this nation.

I heard a television pundit say peace was breaking out in Washington this week. I hope he was right. Most of us understand that it is time to put aside political bickering and posturing, and work together to bring reasonable solutions to the issues our nation faces.

Kissell sponsors health insurance bill

Congressman Larry Kissell has sponsored the Health Insurance Industry Fair Competition Act in an effort to end insurance company monopolies.

The two-page bill, introduced Tuesday, amends the 1945 McCarran-Ferguson Act by repealing the blanket antitrust exemption afforded to health insurance companies, whether organized as for profit or nonprofit entities.

Once again Tucker Engineering Associates (TEA) of Locust has created great interest in its alternative fuel TEA Process, a gasification system which converts landfill waste into methane gas, with carbon as a useful by-product. The win-win process of cleaning up landfills and creating alternative fuels is receiving considerable interest, especially from the U.S. military and the Defense Department.

Medicare cuts affect real people’s lives

More often than not, the solution to any one challenge is dependent upon, and unavoidably linked to, our ability to solve another problem. I saw yet another example of this last week in terms of how we honor our seniors by providing them with quality, affordable healthcare, and how we protect jobs in our rural communities.
