Kissell only one to file this week
Larry Kissell, who fell just 330 votes shy of defeating Congressman Robin Hayes in an election two years ago, will renew his quest for votes in the 8th district and once again fight for a seat in the U.S. House.
Kissell, a democrat, filed for candidacy last week in Washington and will square off against Republican Hayes, who is seeking his sixth term in office. During last election the two sparred in one of the closest races in the state.
This year, Kissell is excited about his prospects.
"As I've crossed the District this past year the sense of urgency for the upcoming elections is what strikes me the most," Kissell said. "Now that folks know we can win, and have tangible proof just how much one vote can impact the quality of life in this District, I'm confident change is on the horizon."
According to the Kissell campaign, if he gained only two additional votes in each precinct, he would have won the 2006 election. He also said fundraising for the new campaign is ahead of schedule compared to his last try.
"Our campaign has raised more to date than we had up until 45 days before the 2006 election," said Kissell spokesman Steve Hudson. "As of today we've raised over $320,000 and we're ahead in the polls. This shows that folks in this District are committed to electing Larry Kissell in November."
Kissell was the only additional candidate to file in local races this week. State house of representatives and board of commissioners seats are still unopposed. Filing ends on February 29 at noon.
