Hayes invested in defense firms
By Lisa Zagaroli
The Center for Responsive Politics says Hayes ranks third in Congress when it comes to being heavily invested in defense-related companies.Hayes has between $9 million and $37 million of his personal assets invested in companies that have defense contracts, more than anyone except Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, R-N.J.
Of course, it helps that Hayes is the eighth richest member of Congress, according to the nonprofit group that tracks money in politics. It estimates the textile heir's net worth at between $32 million and $132 million, according to 2006 financial disclosure forms that report lawmakers' assets in value ranges rather than specific amounts.
